This is the HOTV Brewsletter
August 2006

PRESIDENT: Jerry Malloy
TREASURER: Scott Leonard

The Heart of the Valley Homebrew Club usually meets on the third Wednesday of each month, alternating between Corvallis and Albany. HOWEVER, the August HOTV meeting will take place in the form of our annual Summer Picnic on Sunday, August 27 at 12:00 noon at North Albany Park. See below for more details, and stay tuned for any last minute emails with even more details.

Last month’s meeting was hosted by Mary Shannon O’Boyle at her home in Corvallis. True to her proposed tropical theme, teriyaki chicken, Hawaiian pizza, and drink umbrellas graced the festive but casual meeting. The meeting featured some discussion on the upcoming picnic, and a judging of the AHA club-only Mead competition. Despite being the only entry, Bill Baxter’s Mango Mead was judged: Most Excellent!!, and was unanimously approved as our club’s representative. Congrats Bill, and thanks Mary Shannon! (and thanks to Royal Willard for this report). Bill is also proposing to host another upcoming BJCP training course, so please contact him if you are interested. Speaking of judging…

Curt Hausam of Salem is coordinating the homebrew judging for the Oregon State Fair and they need judges. BJCP judges are preferred, but I am sure they would be happy to have any experienced judge who wants to help. Judging will take place on Saturday, Aug 12th 9:00am at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in the Floral building. Park on the north end of 17th in the tree covered lot & enter the gate directly across. There will be signs. For more information contact Curt Hausam at Awards for the Homebrew competition will be presented on the opening night of the State Fair which is Friday, August 25. You can stick around and see Ted Nugent that night, or come back the next day for Cake, The Violent Femmes, and the Decemberists. Rock on!

The annual club summer picnic will be held Sunday, August 27 at noon in North Albany Park. VP Royal Willard is the organizer by by-law, and has things well in hand. Various members and sponsors of the club will be providing smoked turkey, salmon, kegs of beer, plates and utensils, and you all need to bring a potluck item and more beer to share. Potluck assignments (main dish, side dish, or dessert) will be forthcoming. Entertainment will feature the ever popular beer raffle extravaganza, an egg toss, and other activities in a great rural setting. Stay tuned also for emails on the pre-picnic golf tournament hosted by Scott Caul, where some of the worst golfers in the world (that’s me!) battle it out with some other really bad golfers. Don’t miss this fun!!!

Here is a map to the picnic, assuming you can find your way to Highway 20 between Corvallis and Albany. Head north on either North Albany Rd, Scenic Dr, or Independence Highway to get close to this area.

"Who’d care to be a bee and sip
Sweet nectar from the flower’s lip
When he might be a fly and steer
Head first into a glass of beer"

Our club has brew gear that is available for members to use. All of the items reside at Corvallis Brewing Supply. There is a one week check out limit unless pre-arranged with the equipment dude...that would be me.
  • RIMS (Recirculating Infusion Mash System) Due to the tenacity of this piece of equipment I would strongly suggest that you have a training brew session with someone who has experience in using it. Scott Caul has in the past been gracious to hold open house brewing sessions with this fine piece (of equipment) usually several times of the year.
  • Motorized Grain Mill
  • CO2 kit - Includes CO2 bottle, regulator and tool box full of draft parts
  • Oxygen Bottle and Infusion Stone
  • Counter Pressure Bottle Filler
  • Low-Pressure Burner with tank
  • 12 gallon Stainless Steel Liquor Tank
  • 15 gallon Stainless Steel Mashtun / Lautertun
  • Bench Capper
  • 10 gallon Cornelious Keg
  • AHA Style Guidelines Books 1-8

If you have a piece of equipment that is collecting dust and you would like to donate it to the club please let me know.
